20 Tons of Snow to Fall on the University of Arizona Campus

On Thursday, February 5th, the Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour will hold the first round of a nationwide ski and snowboarding tour, which is completely free and open to the public

Tucson – January 29 – The sun may be shining for us this weekend, but on Thursday, February 5th the University of Arizona Mall will become a winter wonderland as skiers and snowboarders from across the nation throw down in the Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour. Sponsored by Cricket Communications, Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, this national urban snow sport competition is in its second year of existence.

Starting at noon on Thursday, dozens of skiers and snowboarders will traverse three treacherous rails on a course 20 feet tall by 100 feet long. The course will be built Thursday morning using 20 tons of snow trucked in from the Mount Lemon. Proven “snow shredders” will be vying for their share of cash and prizes that will be awarded to the top skiers and snowboarders.

The Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour is the first tour to take snowboarding and skiing off the slopes and into the hearts of college campuses. From Boulder to Boise and Salt Lake City to San Diego, the 12-event Tour will stop on various college campuses throughout 2009. For a complete tour schedule and video from last year’s competition, visit www.CampusRailJamTour.com.

Tour organizers expect attendance at the UofA urban snow sporting event to number in the hundreds or thousands. Last year’s Finals, held in Portland, Oregon, were attended by more than 3,000 people. All told, the 2009 Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour will travel to eight states.

Although the snow, skiers and snowboarders garner most of the attention along the Tour, the Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour also provides college students first-hand event planning and marketing experience. Produced by students and featuring riders from college ski and snowboard teams, the Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour demonstrates what involvement in student organizations can produce. As diverse as the snowboard lifestyle, the Cricket Wireless Campus Rail Jam Tour merges snowboarding, art, music, progressive business and environmental activism to create an event enjoyable to all. At each stop, top professional and local amateur snowboarders perform challenging tricks on an impressive snow and rail setup.
