ST. PATRICK DEMYSTIFIED IN HALLMARK CHANNEL SPECIAL
Emmy® Award-winning Filmmaker Delves Beneath the Legend,
Tells "The Story of the Man"
"Unlike Mel Gibson, my interest does not spring from any religious point of view," says documentary filmmaker Pamela Mason Wagner, whose latest project presents a compelling portrait of one of the most misunderstood figures in history. "Patrick's story intrigued me for its dramatic elements: a rich boy kidnapped and enslaved by pirates, who escapes slavery - a feat unheard of at that time - only to go back and show mercy to his captors. That's pretty exciting stuff."
A graduate of Dartmouth College who won an Emmy® Award for her program in the American Masters series, "Finding Lucy," and has collaborated with journalist Bill Moyers on several projects including the Emmy® Award-winning "Healing and the Mind," Mason Wagner reflects on "Patrick," which premieres Sunday, March 14 (10/9c) on Hallmark Channel.
What attracts you to the stories of saints?
I've been drawn to the lives of the saints because they invariably make good stories. The challenge in telling the story of a saint is to make that person real, believable and most importantly human. Over the centuries vast amounts of piety, legend and myth have sprung up around these larger than life historical figures. My job is to strip that away, to get to the essence of who they really were, to uncover their voices. That's why we've restricted ourselves in this latest film "Patrick" to using Patrick's own writings as our primary source, and happily we have the very able talents of Gabriel Byrne bringing Patrick's words to life. There's enough good storytelling in what really happened to him to make a very exciting hour; we didn't need to rely on the myths and legends, because the true story is much more interesting, and less understood.
Compared to other saints, why are Patrick, Francis (whom you
profiled in a previous documentary) and Joan (one of your next
subjects) so universal and immortal?
I think there are several reasons these three have captured the
world's imagination. First, they each became symbols for an entire
nation: Francis for Italy; Patrick for his adopted Ireland; and
Joan for France. Second, they are wildly individualistic, and
defy categorization. These are not goody goody saints that tow
the line for the church. Francis was such an independent thinker
that he refused to become a priest; Patrick fought with his ecclesiastical
superiors when they went against the church's precepts; and Joan
stayed true to her voices only to be betrayed by her church.
All these individuals shook up the status quo; everybody likes
a character who does that!
Are you approaching St. Patrick's story from a historical, religious or human perspective?
This film definitely approaches Patrick's story from a human perspective. We are trying to get inside the human being who was cold and afraid and felt abandoned on that hillside in the north of Ireland. Our narrator, Liam Neeson, mentioned during his recording session that, as a boy, his father took him to the hillside associated with Patrick's conversion. Patrick's religion sprang from his personal relationship with God - a theme shared by Francis, Patrick and Joan - so the religious perspective is really through his eyes. The film always refers to him as Patrick, not Saint Patrick. We're telling the story of the man.
What, if anything, surprised you about St. Patrick as his story unfolded?
I had no idea going into this what a high regard Patrick had
for women. He saw an active role for women in his religious movement.
That was unusual for the time. Perhaps Patrick was influenced
by his six years of slavery in Ireland, where he would have observed
women holding a much higher position in society than they could
in the Roman Empire. In 5th century Ireland, women could own
property, could divorce their
husbands and generally speaking did wield some power. It is ironic
that after Patrick's time, when the institutional church took
hold, the position for women got worse in Ireland.
What's the genesis of the "driving the snakes out of Ireland" story?
This story, which is often the only thing that people have ever heard about Patrick, probably stems from the medieval association of paganism with serpents. It's ironic, even funny that Ireland never had snakes to begin with! After the last ice age, the land bridge between Ireland and continental Europe closed too early for the reptiles to migrate that far north.
How do you think St. Patrick would want to be remembered? (Certainly not from green beer!)
I think Patrick would want to be remembered for what he really was: a slave who returned forgiveness instead of vengeance to his former captors; a teacher who encouraged literacy for all; and as a moral leader, willing to stand up to his superiors and criticize their actions when they did not measure up to the ethical standards their own religion espoused.
Why do people associate St. Patrick with the shamrock?
It was interesting for me to learn that the shamrock was a
sacred plant for the druids, and was therefore linked to the indigenous
religion that existed in Ireland before Patrick
arrived. Like so many Christian symbols, holidays and rituals,
it looks like this sacred pagan plant was co-opted by the Christians
for their own purposes. Because of its
three-leaf shape, it suggested the father, son and Holy Spirit
to some mythmaker along the way. That idea obviously appealed
to a lot of visual artists who have created numerous paintings
and statues of Patrick holding the shamrock down through the ages.

Acclaimed Filmmaker Kevin Smith Stung By The Green Hornet
Miramax Films Taps Smith to Write and Direct Action-Adventure Feature
NEW YORK, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Gearing up for one of its
most ambitious
film franchises to date, Miramax Films co-chairman Harvey Weinstein
announced
today that renowned filmmaker and comic book author, collector
and self
described "comic fan-boy" Kevin Smith will write and
direct the film version
of the classic action-adventure persona, The Green Hornet. The
film
represents Miramax's expansion of its development and production
slate to
include motion pictures that can compete in the "tent pole"
marketplace.
George Trendle, the son of Green Hornet creator George Trendle,
will executive
produce the film along with Harold Berkowitz.
Smith is keeping the plot a closely guarded secret, and will only
go as
far to say that it would remain very true to Trendle's characters
with a few
new twists.
"Kevin's tremendous work on our upcoming Jersey Girl, has
demonstrated his
continued growth as a filmmaker and we have no doubt that he will
tackle this
franchise for us in a compelling and entertaining way. In addition
to being a
great writer and director, Kevin knows more about comic characters,
books and
the creative process than anyone else I have ever met," said
Weinstein. "The
character of The Green Hornet offers a myriad of possible film
ideas and
numerous merchandise and branded integration opportunities with
our corporate
partners, giving us a platform for a very viable and long standing
franchise."
"Long-time comics geek gets to make comic book movie? This
is a dream
come true. I'm still reeling! You don't know how in love with
Harvey
Weinstein I am right now. I couldn't have asked for a better vote
of
confidence in me as a filmmaker than being afforded the opportunity
with
'Hornet' to push beyond the boundaries of what I've done in film
thus far,"
said Smith. Adding, "And making this movie with Miramax means
that not only
will we deliver an exciting, chop-socky-filled action flick, but
it's gonna
have a compelling story, believable characters, and great dialogue
to boot!
Let's roll, Kato!"
Beginning with his seminal film Clerks, Smith has woven comic
book
references and iconology into the dialogue and characters in many
of his
films. In 1997's Chasing Amy, Smith's two main characters, who
are comic-book
writers/artists, create a comic duo known as Bluntman and Chronic;
a duo which
also appears in Smith's 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
In his
sophomore film Mallrats, Smith also featured comic-book legend
Stan Lee in a
supporting role.
Smith is well known for writing award-winning, best-selling runs
of
"Daredevil" for Marvel Comics and "Green Arrow"
for DC Comics, as well as
comics based on his films Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob Strike
Back. Smith is
also credited with rekindling the mainstream public's interest
in comics
through his 1998 Daredevil comic book story arc, entitled Guardian
Devil.
Serving as Hollywood's comic-book connoisseur, Smith is no stranger
to The
Green Hornet. In 1993 Smith sold his comic book collection to
help finance
the $27,000 budget of his 1994 debut film, "Clerks;"
a collection which
included several 'Green Hornet' titles.
Smith is the proud owner of his own comic book store, Jay and
Silent Bob's
Secret Stash, which opened in 1997 in Red Bank, NJ and is scheduled
to open a
west coast branch in Westwood this May.
Jon Gordon, executive vice president of production, and Hannah
Minghella,
creative executive, will oversee the project on behalf of Miramax.
Charles Layton, executive vice president, office of the co-chairman,
and
Steve Hutensky, executive vice president of business affairs,
negotiated on
behalf of Miramax. Attorney John Sloss and the Endeavor Agency
represented
Smith.
Miramax and Smith's most recent collaboration Jersey Girl, starring
Ben
Affleck and Liv Tyler, will open in theaters nationwide in March,
2004.

Acclaimed Film Director Kevin Smith's Take on Harvey Weinstein
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 23, 2004 /PRNewswire/ -- It feels like every
year at this
time, someone "discovers" that Harvey Weinstein is a
tough businessman with a
temper as large and legendary as his passion for cinema. Whoa.
Stop the
presses.
This also just in: The sun is bright.
With Sundance '04 well under way, this week marks 10 years
since I was
given a golden ticket into the film biz. The usher who brought
me down the
aisle and showed me to my seat was the supposed "Terror of
Tribeca" himself,
Harvey Weinstein. So right off the bat, you might consider everything
I write
with a grain of salt, as without Harvey, I'd still be jockeying
a register in
a New Jersey convenience store (which I'm sure, for some, is yet
another
reason to hate him).
But rather than jump on the recent bandwagon of unloading a
character
assassination sniper rifle into the Kevlar-tempered hide of perhaps
the only
truly interesting Suit (or, in this case, Suspenders) in the film
biz, I'd
like to defend a man I respect, love, and would take a bullet
for: the last,
great movie mogul.
As a guy whose first flick ("Clerks") was dirt cheap
and looked like it
was shot through a glass of milk, I've been called a "sellout"
by those who
feel a move to 35mm ruined my artistic integrity (like I had any
to begin
with). "Sellout" is the cry of the garage band fan who
wants to keep a good
thing to himself; the kinda folks who'd govern your growth by
insisting you
never diversify.
But when Harvey (and by extension Miramax) is labeled a sellout
for making
"Cold Mountain" solely because the budget was almost
10 times that of "Pulp
Fiction," one has to wonder if the labeler forever quaffs
from half-empty
glasses. A sellout would have dumped that picture when their studio
partner
pulled out. A sell-out doesn't assume the entire, risky budget
just so that
one of the family can bring their vision to life. Had Harvey &
Co. been the
half to go south, leaving MGM alone atop the "Mountain,"
would we ever have
gotten to see how clean Nicole Kidman looked against the dirty
south
background of the Civil War? I think not.
Would a sell-out bother to release "The Magdalene Sisters"
or produce
"Dirty Pretty Things"? Because last time I checked,
Vatican-denounced hot
potatoes and organ-harvesting pictures were not boffo box-office
bets. But
it's easy to overlook the type of commitment to niche filmmaking
it requires
to put out a movie about Armenian genocide ("Ararat")
when you're ignoring the
details and easy-gunning the misbegotten casualties of growing
pains like
"Duplex" (which even I haven't forgiven Harvey for).
When it comes to the
pursuit of cinematic excellence, some folks remain stationary,
and others
bring us "The Station Agent."
Can Harvey be a brute? God, yes. I've seen tantrums firsthand
that have
been so outlandish, I was sure I was being "Punk'd"
by Alan Funt. But in
almost every case, Harvey was ultimately right. Turned up to 11,
yes, but
right nonetheless. This is the making of art (or, at the very
least, movies)
we're talking about; passions are bound to fly.
I'll take the shouter over the eerily soft-spoken, cold, bald
studio exec
who once invited me into his office for a meeting simply to tell
me I wasn't
good enough to make a movie at Warner Bros. (when I never even
asked to do so
in the first place) any day of the week. Given a choice between
a
clock-puncher with his hand on the rip cord of a golden parachute
and a guy
who, with his brother, set a tone every studio's tried their hand
at
mimicking, I'm happy to wear a spit guard on occasion.
And how weird is it when filmmakers and folks who've worked
for the 'Max
come out of the woodwork to eviscerate the hand that fed them?
Most of these
cats never would've had the opportunities they did unless Harvey
gave it to
them. You see any other studio bigwigs following his example and
offering
former assistants the chance to exec produce films? How many folks
were
beating down the door to distribute "Citizen Ruth"?
Jeez, what ever happened
to gratitude? Ah, what am I talking about? It's the movie biz,
Jake.
Bottom line, you can love a meal, and hate the chef -- but
only hate the
chef if he spits in your food. Based on the quality of the quantity
he
distributes annually, Harvey can never be accused of doing that
(unless you
count that "Pinocchio"). Most critics of Harvey would
step on their mothers'
necks to be as successful as he's been at creating something from
nothing -- to build, rather than inherit; to innovate, rather
than follow.
So he blows his top inappropriately from time to time (alright,
several
times a day)? Big deal. He's the only non-actor personality in
this business
I know who people will still be telling stories about generations
from now,
marveling at his repertoire.
In the dysfunctional family that is the movie biz, I couldn't
ask for a
better father.
And while I can't put words in the man's mouth, I suspect Harvey
would sum
up everything I've written above thusly...

11th ANNUAL FAITH & VALUES "MOVIE GUIDE AWARDS" GALA TO BE PRESENTED MARCH 24TH
(Hollywood 1/15/04) -- The Christian Film & Television Commission will present their annual Faith & Values Awards Gala and televised presentation of the "MovieGuide Awards" on March 24, 2004 in Los Angeles, California.
In this their 11th year, the "MovieGuide Award" continues to symbolize an award of excellence and merit to the films, television productions, producers, directors, writers, studio executives, and creative talent that best extol moral values and Christian principals in the pursuit of entertainment.
The Christian Film & Television Commission was founded in 1978 by Dr. Ted Baehr. An internationally noted educator, publisher, producer and media scholar, Dr. Baehr's initiative has devoted itself to redeeming the values of the entertainment industry according to Biblical principals by influencing top industry executives and creative artists to adopt higher moral and spiritual principals in their productions.
Since the Commission made its presence in Hollywood known, the number of movies with positive moral content has increased from 68 such films in 1991 to 202 such movies in 2002- an increase of 197 percent. Even more amazingly, the number of movies with spiritually uplifting, redemptive and/or Christian content increased from a mere 27 to 135 in the same time periodóan incredible 400 percent increase.
"MovieGuide," the Commission's official report card on the entertainment industry has grown from it's origination in 1985 to become an internationally seen weekly television program, both a daily and weekly radio broadcast, an internet newsletter, and an international publishers edition.
Noted Dr. Baehr: "A recent study White Paper study by ìMovieGuide,î reported beyond shadow of a doubt that movies with strong Christian redemptive and moral content, year in and year out, earn much more money on average at the box office and in the video stores than movies with excessive sexual immorality, nudity, violence, vulgarity, and other anti-Christian content and world views."
In a recent letter to Dr. Baehr, President George W. Bush noted: "The entertainment community has a profound effect upon our culture and particularly upon our young people. Box offices receipts reveal that Americans want to see movies of the caliber you honor. I hope that your awards will encourage the best producers, directors, writers and actors to create films and television program that lift our hearts and warm our souls by skillfully pointing to beauty and truth un an artful and contemporary manner."
Past films honored by the "MovieGuide Awards" include: "A Beautiful Mind," "I Am Sam," "Pearl Harbor," "Monsters, Inc.," "The Princess Diaries," "Shrek," "The Prince Of Egypt," and "The Lord Of the Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring."
As a prelude to this year's event, Dr. Baehrís has been recently in high demand by national media to comment nationally on the Christian Film & Television Commission's official stand on the February release of Mel Gibson's controversial new film, "The Passion."
Noted Dr. Baehr in a recent interview: "I heartily applaud Mel Gibson, "The Passion," and the other Christians who have the courage to proclaim their beliefs in the mass media of entertainment as Mr. Gibson has."
Celebrity presenters and musical performers for this year's award ceremonies on March 24th in LA are currently in the process of being finalized. Details of the telecast of the event by PAX-TV will be forthcoming.
Media for the 11th Annual Faith & Values "Movieguide Awards" will be handled by Webster & Associates Public Relations from their Los Angeles based office, according to Kirt Webster, President of the firm.
Noted Webster's Vice President of West Coast Media, Howie Simon: "We are extremely honored to join Dr. Baehr's efforts in bringing the Christian Film & Television Commission and the "Movieguide Awards" to a higher level of industry awareness. At no time in the industry has the importance of their work seemed more relevant."

This program will be available in March through Films for the Humanities & Sciences at: www.films.com, or by contacting the Shoah Foundation at www.vhf.org/givingvoice.
Synopsis
Adapted from the novel by Thomas Keneally, Steven Spielberg's masterful film tells the incredible true story of the courageous Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson). Initially a member of the Nazi party, the Catholic Schindler risks his career and life, and ultimately goes bankrupt, to employ 1100 Jews in his crockery factory during the Holocaust. Schindler's Jewish accountant (Ben Kingsley) serves as his conscience, as Schindler conducts business with an obstinate and cruel Nazi commander (Ralph Fiennes), who viciously kills Jewish prisoners from the balcony of his villa overlooking a prison camp. Filmed almost entirely in black-and-white on-location in Poland, Schindler's List does not downplay the faults of its magnanimous and unlikely hero, but relates a story of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of horrific devastation and tragedy.
