| El Charro Many consider dinner at El Charro a must for any Tucson visit. In operation since 1922, El Charro (311 N. Court Ave.) is the oldest continuously family owned Mexican restaurant in the USA. Fajitas, chalupas, rellenos, tamales and enchiladas don't get any more traditional and authentic. You'll see a wire cage hanging above the restaurant's roof. This is where they dry beef in the traditional way for carne seca. The Tack Room Irene's Peruvian Restaurant Dine South of the border ... way South! Irene's at 254 E. Congress specializes in the cuisine of Peru. Choose from a healthy nuevo-casera menu and full bar. Dance salsa and tango in a smokie-free enviroment. Cushing Street Cafe & Bar This historic Tucson landmark at 198 W. Cushing St. is a favorite gathering place downtown. Known for its homemade soups. 140 N. Main. The museum's notable permanent collection includes pre-Columbian, Hispanic, Western, Asian and contemporary art, as well as changing exhibitions annually. The neighboring Historic Block features five restored homes of Historic El Presidio District 343 S. Meyer Ave. features an attractive 1880s' decor with beautiful wood furnishings. Joseph Ferrin lived here and operated a general store about 100 years ago. This restored Mission Revival bungalow represents a middle-class house of the early 1900s. J. Knox Corbett came to Arizona to recover from tuberculosis in 1880 and built this house in 1906-1907. He was a successful businessman and served 23 years as the Tucson Postmaster. Come inside to see the beautiful arts and crafts furnishings on a self-guided tour. 200 S 6th Street. Full of things to do, this museum has been designed especally for kids 2-11 (who must be with an adult). Children have fun exploring the world, conducting scientific experiments, learning about different careers, discovering new cultures, and getting behind the wheel of a real fire truck. 329 E.7th Street. The Bohemian heart of Tucson lies along this street located between downtown and the university. Ethnic cafes, restaurants, galleries, and thrift shops line both sides from University Boulevard South to 9th Street. Old Pueblo Trolley runs antique eletric streetcars along 4th Avenue and University Boulevard on Friday evenings. 949 E. 2nd Street. Exhibits take you through Arizona's Spanish, Mexican, Mountain Men, Territorial and early statehood eras. Period rooms, artifacts and photos bring history to life. Temporary exhibits and special programs interpret aspects of the past. Visitors of all ages enjoy the early 1900s copper mine exhibit, where you can walk through a realistic mine and other processing machinery. |
