The second chapter (or Mishna, in Hebrew) of the "Sefer Yetzirah" describes how to turn the 22 Hebrew letters into the 231 Gates.

The sum of 231 represents the number of possible combinations of the 22 Hebrew letters; in groups of twos. The number value of 231 is also the product of 3, 6, and 11.
