Qabalah: Bob Zucker

A digital collection of Parapsychology works

By Robert Zucker

My interest in the occult began while in high school in the 1970s. As I read more from authors like Gershom Scholem, Israel Regardie, Aleister Crowley, A.E. Waite, among others, I expanded my perspective from basic magick into the mystical studies of the Qabalah.

The "Sefer Yetzirah" became a focal point since most of today's knowledge of the occult comes from the principles described in this ancient manuscript. The desire to understand its meaning carried over into my interest in computers. In the late 1980s, I began to collect my files and design an easy way to access the information.

Some of the material on this website was originally written in 1976 as part of a three-year study program while attending college. Now, after 30 years it is updated with new findings and made publically available. Only a small sliver of that information is posted online though.

During those college years three manuscripts, of several hundreds of pages, were produced for college credit in five different University departments (psychology, sociology, anthropology, Judaic studies and journalism) from 1975-77. Instead of attending classes all day, my days were spent reading, studying, writing and gaining insight.

Over the past four decades, I have refined the material, gained new experiences and knowledge. Using a Macintosh computer and software programs like HyperCard and FileMaker Pro, I've slowly molded an enormous software application that studies the various aspects of the Qabalah using the "Sefer Yetzirah" as its base. Read updates on the QBL Keys Project- a database of mysticism.

Anyone interested in the Qabalah program can keep posted through my website (emol.org/kabbala/). Either downloadable copies will be available for purchase or mailed on CD.

Comments from manuscript sponsors

These are some of the comments from letters of recommendation by several of the professors who sponsored this independent study in parapsychology in the 1970s:

Last semester, Robert E. Zueker, Senior in the College of Liberal Arts, counseled with me concerning an ambitious research project covering five disciplines.

The nature of the study required a coordinated approach involving 15 units of independent study. After he received the approval of four other departments - Anthropology, Journalism, Psychology and Sociology, I agreed to sponsor the project.

The final manuscript of more than 200 pages of text and bibliography involves considerable research and is a fine summary of the currently available literature in the field of Hermetics.

During this past semester, Mr. Zucker has succeeded through independent study in producing a scholarly review of unusual scope. His written product is a bit fragmentary in its present form (since he concentrated primarily on amassing information in the areas that he surveyed), but with a bit more in the way of synthesizing it could be turned into a very publishable book.

Without question, Mr. Zucker has learned more by devoting his semester to this endeavor than he would have by a semester of regular coursework.

Mr. Robert Zucker has asked me to write a letter of reference in his behalf. I have known Bob for a little over a year now. He approached me with a plan to take an entire semester for individual study and writing. The time was to be provided by four departments. I was very sceptical at first as anyone would be after ten years of U/A students.

However, the semester produced a 225 page, well researched, competently written book. Not a term paper but a genuine book length manuscript which I believe. has some real possibilties for publication. Since that time, Mr. Zucker has continued his research into hermetics and has elaborated and polished the original manuscript.

Mr. Zucker is a polished researcher who can organize himself and his work and get the results down in good prose without supervision. I have done literally hundreds of hours of independent study with undergraduate students and his is by far the best perforance I've had. The book, Hermetics, is sufficiently food that publication is not out of the question.

"Origins of Kabbalah"

By Gershom Sholem

Amazon.com: Gershom Scholem's Origins of the Kabbalah provides a painstakingly detailed history of Kabbalah's rise among medieval French and Spanish Jews, describes the first publication of Jewish mystical texts, and investigates the growth of their influence on Jewish religious life. The book also doubles back to describe secret traditions of Jewish Gnosticism, which describe a Creation story so numerological and esoteric it makes the New Testament book of Revelation look as simple and straightforward as a Saturday-morning cartoon. This book is much denser than Scholem's excellent On the Kabbalah and its Symbolism, but for readers with a basic knowledge of Kabbalah, it shouldn't be rough going. --Michael Joseph Gross.

Author: Gershom Scholem

Amazon.com: Gershom Scholem, who died in 1982, remains the biggest gun in kabbalah scholarship, and On the Kabbalah and its Symbolism is perhaps his most accessible book on the subject. It contains definitive essays on the relation of the Torah to Jewish mysticism, the mythology of the kabbalah, and the place of Jewish mystics in the Jewish community. This book helped reinvigorate 20th-century Jewish studies with an awareness of the living reality of God, after the 19th century's more astringent scholarly emphasis on law and philosophy. It shows how Jewish mystics have been less concerned with adherence to orthodoxy than their Christian counterparts, and freer in their expression of the divine aspects of eroticism. Furthermore, Scholem offers great insight regarding the ways that kabbalah has not only threatened the authority of institutional religion, but also served as a source of its vitality. --Michael Joseph Gross
