ARIZONA OPERA ANNOUNCES STREAMLING OF ORGANIZATION AND LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR GENERAL DIRECTOR

Moving aggressively in response to the uncertain economic climate, Arizona Opera implemented a series of cost-saving measures, while maintaining a full slate of productions for the 2009-2010 season. The company has also begun a search for a General Director to head its overall operations. This position is expected to be filled by fall.

To bring expenses in line with anticipated income, several senior positions have been consolidated, staff layoffs and furloughs were implemented, salaries have been reduced across the board and the overall budget was restructured.

“The Board of Trustees evaluated every scenario before proceeding with some tough but strategically sound decisions. Every arts organization in Arizona and across the country must adjust to current economic realities. Arizona Opera is fortunate to have deep roots and a broad base of community support that will sustain us in these difficult times,” stated incoming Board Chairman David Christensen. “On behalf of the Board, I express our gratitude to Debra Harrison, Lisa Bury and Roberto Mauro who are leaving to pursue their careers elsewhere. Their hard work and dedicated leadership has helped Arizona Opera become a more efficient and focused organization. At the same time, we are also indebted to our artistic and production values will remain first class. Arizona Opera has a long history of presenting top quality opera and we are confident that the Company will meet our challenges and will prosper – artistically and financially.

Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Joel Revzen said, “I applaud the amazing stewardship, commitment and dedication of our Board of Trustees. While making very difficult financial decisions about the future of the Company, they were careful not to diminish the artistic integrity which is at the heart of our identity. Arizona Opera will continue to bring the transformative power of music to the people of Arizona.

Arizona Opera is a professional opera company, which produces fully-staged opera performances, concerts, an in-school touring production and education and outreach programs that reaches to over 35,000 schoolchildren and adults annually. Founded in 1971 in Tucson, the company has grown to become one of the few companies in the United States to serve multiple cities.

Arizona Theatre Company’s production of The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner runs at the Temple of Music and Art in Tucson September 10 – October 3, 2009 and at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix October 8 – October 25, 2009.

A New York Times Best-Seller becomes an equally compelling stage production. War on Terrorism is just as real today as it was eight years ago. Nearly eight years after the United States declared war on Afghanistan, ATC will proudly bring the most widely experienced account of the other victims of global terrorism to chilling life.  With the aid of San Francisco playwright Matthew Spangler and world-renown and NY Times Best-Selling author Khaled Hosseini, our very own ATC Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein will capture the emotion of international strife and expel it movingly to the audience of Arizona and the world.

Premiere production developed from the mind of ATC resident artist David Ira Goldstein (live interview opportunities both available and encouraged); David can provide a teaser about bringing the pages to theatrically technical life (i.e. kite flying; sets that portray both the Bay Area and the war-torn Afghanistan).

Developed with close supervision from the original critically acclaimed author Khaled Hosseini (phone interview opportunities may be requested); The Kite Runner reached best seller status in 2005 and has held a place there continually for the past four years.  It was also voted the Reading Group Book of the Year for 2006 and 2007.
