Trixie & The Goose

By Tracie K. Reed

One day Trixie was sitting on her front porch trying to think of something that she could do. She was really bored. She had no friends yet, because her and her family had just moved there from another state. It was close to the end of summer and all the neighbor kids were all having fun doing summer things with their friends all except for Trixie.

She was six years old. She thought to herself, "Hum! I could go to my new room and color or play with my Barbie dolls, but that's no fun without someone to color with. My big brothers are to busy doing boy things so I couldn't ask them to play with me. And Mom is to busy unpacking things. What could I do"

Just as Trixie was feeling sad and lonely without someone to play with, she heard a small faint sound that seemed to be getting louder as it seemed to be coming closer to her.

Trixie was very curious as to what the sound was. She got up quickly and looked all around. She didn't see anything, anywhere until she found herself standing in the middle of the street right in front of her house. She stood there looking straight ahead of her with her eyes wide opened.

Trixie was really excited to see what was coming towards her. It was a goose waddling quickly towards her and quacking as if it was speaking to her. Trixie was very happy to see the goose. She wasn't scared of it at all. She ran to the goose to meet him.

She said, "Hi! Mr. Goose. Why are you running in the street all by yourself? Why don't you come to my house with me and play? We have to get out of the street before a car comes." Trixie and the goose walked side by side over to her house.

She was so happy that she had found a friend to play with. She wondered where the goose had come from. Trixie and the goose went on her front porch. Her mother came out to see what was making the quacking noise. She looked at Trixie and asked, "Where did he come from?"

Trixie said, "I found him. He was in the street and he came to me. I think he came to play with me." Trixie's Mom smiled at Trixie and said, "Oh! I see. But he can only stay until we find out were he belongs." Trixie replied, "Oh, but can't we keep him Mom?"

Trixie's Mom said, "No! He belongs to someone. He will have to go back." Trixie's Mom went back inside of the house.

Trixie felt a little sad that the goose had to leave once they had found were he belonged. One of Trixie's older brothers came walking around the corner of the house with his new friend from next door. He saw Trixie and her goose.

He asked, "Where did you get that?" Trixie said, "I found him. But Mom said we have to give him back to wherever he belongs." Alan, her brothers friend, replied, "I bet he belongs to Mr. Woods down the street. He has a bunch of animals." Her brother, James said, "Lets take him there and find out."

Trixie started to get upset. She had just found her new friend. She said, "Please just let me keep him a little longer to play with first. James said, "OK! You stay here with the goose and play with him while we go and ask Mr. Woods if he belongs to him. Trixie said sadly. "OK!"

James and his friend Alan went down the street to ask Mr. Woods. Trixie brought the goose inside of the house and said, "OK, goose! Stay here. I will be right back."

Trixie ran upstairs and then into her room. She was searching in her Barbie doll clothes. She grabbed a piece of cloth and ran back down stairs. She asked her Mom to help her clip the piece of cloth to the goose. Her Mom did just that. They put the piece of cloth on the geese head to fit like a bonnet.

She looked at her Mom giggling and said, "He looks like a she and she also looks like mother goose." Her Mom giggled to and said, "Yes, he does. And I bet this goose is a she after all."

Trixie kept smiling and asked, "Mom can we please keep the goose?" Her Mom said, "Now Trixie, you know we can't keep the goose."

James came inside of the house out of breath from running. He said, "Guess what? Mr. Woods said that it isn't his. All eight of his geese are there." Trixie was so happy that the goose didn't seem to belong to anyone. She looked up at her Mom. Her Mom just looked at Trixie and said, "OK, But just for a while. Someone is missing a goose and we need to find out."

Trixie took the goose outside to play with. They played all day. She chased the goose and the goose chased her. She fed the goose with some bread. They even played with the water hose in her front yard. She had so much fun with the goose. Some of the neighbor kids would watch from across the street.

Trixie sat down to rest. She said, "Goose, I had so much fun with you today. You are better then any friend that I've had."

Suddenly the goose looked up at the sky and started quacking loud. Trixie said, "What's wrong?" She to looked up at the sky. She saw a bunch of other geese in the sky flying in a shape of a "V." She looked at the goose and asked, "That's your family isn't it? I bet you miss your family."

Trixie took the cloth off of the geese head and said, "You better hurry and go before your family is gone." The goose quacked at Trixie as if to say thank you and good bye. Trixie with tears in her eyes hugged the goose and then she let go. She said, "Go! Hurry!"

The goose flew up in the sky to meet the other geese. Trixie waved and said, "Goodbye goose, don't forget me!"

One of the neighbor kids came running over to Trixie. She was about the same age as Trixie. She asked, "Did your goose run away?" Trixie said, "No! She just had to go home. The little girl asked Trixie, " Well, can you play with me now that your goose is gone?" Trixie smiled and said, "Yes! I can play. What's your name? The little girl answered, "Mary! What's yours?" Trixie replied, "Trixie! Would you like to play with my Barbies?" Mary said, "Sure!" So Trixie and Mary went to get the Barbies to play with.

Trixie was very happy that she now had a new friend even though she had just lost her new friend the goose. Every year around the same time that she had met the goose. She would look up in the sky and wave as the geese flew by. She hoped that some day the goose would come back and see her again. The End
