Post-holiday ads are better than ever
Customers who shop major retailers online after the 2009 Christmas holiday may find better deals not offered in the stores.
Plus, there are no long lines, fumbling with packages or traffic when you shop at home online.
That's because businesses often over-estimate customer expectations. While store shelves can hold only so much merchandise, online sales are shipped from the stock rooms where more inventory is stored. In December, holiday sales were weaker than anticipated despite discounting to 60% or even 80%.
This year, with the economic downturn, many merchants were caught off guard with a surplus of merchandise. In order to clear out the remaining 2008 inventory to make room for 2010 spring merchandise, retailers are even taking a loss on products.
