Drop in tourism means more incentivesA recent survey by a AP-Gfk Poll found that only 42% of Americans plan to take a vacation trip this summer. In 2005, 40% planned summer vacations. Travel could shrink even more if the recession continues through the holidays or into 2010. The Poll, conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media during April 16-20, 2009, asked 1,000 random adults their summer travel plans. The survey also found that 7% of Americans surveyed plan a more elaborate trip to take advantage of lower prices. Memorial Day airfare at its lowestTravelocity’s Memorial Day data report shows that the overall average airfare for travel on Memorial Day weekend, including both domestic and international bookings, is as low as airfare from 2006, despite an inflation rate of approximately 5 percent since then. According to Travelocity’s data, the overall average airfare for Memorial Day is $357, down 12 percent from last year, with international fares taking the steepest decline. “International fares had been slower to decline than domestic fares but have taken a plunge for the holiday,” Amy Ziff, Travelocity’s editor-at-large, said, adding that international fares are 13 percent lower than last year. “With international capacity cuts planned for the fall, fares will likely increase. Travelers who have the discretionary income to do so should take advantage of these low fares while they last.” See current and last minute deals for Travelocity's Top 10 Vacation Destinations. International Air Fares for Memorial Weekend“Even though Memorial Day is largely a domestic holiday, and domestic fares are good, international travel is an even better value right now,” says Ziff.
