The Original Mountain Newsreal newspaper in Tucson, Arizona
The Newsreal monthly tabloid newspaper,
known originally as the Tucson Mountain Newsreal, was founded by
Jonathan L in Tucson, Arizona in May, 1974.
The monthly edition of Newsreal brought local Tucson, regional and national music coverage, eclectic articles and features.
Through the 11 years the Newsreal was
in circulation, it was "the" underground tabloid of the '70s and the
local Tucson, Arizona music source of the '80s until it ceased
publication in October 1985.
Early in its publishing history, the
Newsreal was called Tucson's Mountain Newsreal. In December 1980, the
publication name was shortened to Newsreal and the emphasis was
completely music- both local and national.
By the mid 1980's, Tucson circulation grew to 20,000, with 4,000 copies also distributed in Phoenix.
Over the years, hundreds of aspiring journalists did their stint under Jonathan's guidance. EMOL.org publisher, Robert Zucker, wrote for the Newsreal in 1977-78.
In 1985, Jonathan L gave Robert Zucker Newsreal's office equiment, back
issues and layout flats, some supplies and his blessings to run
articles from the Newsreal.
