The Abelow Family Genealogy

Abelow, Abeloff, Abelov

Most Abelows may be closely related. They are reportedly a very small clan originating in Eastern Europe, perhaps originating from Spain.

During the Spanish Inquisition in 1492, the original Abelow's left Spain and spread throughout Europe, settling in Russia, Lithuania and Poland. At the turn of the 20th Century, Abelow families began to migrate to the United States and now live from Los Angeles to New York CIty.

The Abelow surname could have derived from "Abel." Abel is a biblical forename which may derive from the Hebrew Hebel, itself derived from hevel (breath or vapour), or from the Assyrian for son. In reference to the biblical story, the name Abel often occurs with that of his brother, as Cain and Abel. Abel is the second son of Adam.

Abelow's may be related to Abelov, Abeloff, Abello, Abelof. When families settled into the United States, transcribing their Hebrew name Aleph, Bayt, Lamed (Vav or Pe), the English speaking immigration clerks spelled it as it sounded to them. This raises speculation if the famous Qabalist and Spanish Rabbi Abraham Abulafia is related.

Stan Lipson, an avid Abelow researcher, believes that it is quite possible that Abelov (-ow), (-ove), (-off) - intotal about a dozen variants - derive from the Sephardic "Abulofia," which goes back to Toledo in the 1300's. Both names stress the same syllable. He has less faith that Abalo (and variants) derive from Abulofia, as it is accented differently. He found no other evidence of Sephardic traditions (other than linguistic), but the name "Abelov" was certainly in use in Lithuania between 1770 and 1790.

Some Abelows are buried at Mount Hebron Cemetary in Flushing, New York and Meretz Cemetary in Woburn, Mass. Some Abelow's came to the United States through the Meretz (Merkine), Lithuania.
