The Grodzinski Family Line

Chaim Ozer Grodzinski http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaim_Ozer_Grodzinski
Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski (1863-1940) was a world renowned pre-war Dayan, Posek and Talmudic scholar in Vilna. Rabbi Grodzinski was born in 1863 in Iuje, Belarus, a small town near Vilna where his father served as Rabbi for forty years, preceded by his grandfather who had also been a Rabbi there for a similar length of time. Rabbi Chaim Ozer was gifted with an infallible memory - never experiencing "forgetting", as he himself remarked, until his old age. (Wikipedia).

Messages from Grodzinsky relatives looking for other related family members:

(1/21/07) Hi, I came across your site whilst browsing looking for info on Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzenski of Vilna- I understand that he was a distant relative of mine.  My cousin has a photograph of the Rabbi and my cousin's  late father told him that he was a distant relative of theirs.  Please tell me the best place to look for the Rabbi's family tree.  Is there anywhere where it is possible to see the family tree written? I hope you don't mind me asking but as you are also a distant relative of the Rabbi and have experience in looking for information I thought I would ask. I can see now how difficult it is to do a family tree, but it would be nice to pass on this info to the family.  The Rabbi would be a relative on my mother's side - she was born in England. Hoping to hear from you. Jackie Schachter jackiekg@zahav.net.il

Hi, Just found your site and great work! Since you have relations to the Grodzinsky family, wondering if we have any links that you are aware of. My relations can be documented to a Max Grodxinsky from Volkovisk, Lithuania. He had a sister Harriet who married a Harris Greenberg and lived in Buffalo, NY. Max had six children and was a tailor, also living in Buffalo. It is documented that Max and his sons had great voices and were frequently called upon to lead synagoue services serving as Torah readers and cantors. Hope you can shed more light. Max Grodzinsky's real first name appears to have been Mordechai and was born in 1813. His first wife gave him six children in Europe and died there. Max and all six children came to the US and settled in Buffalo. Yes, you are welcome to list this branch and hopefully someone will recognize us. I see that you live in Tucson. My wife is originally from Cooledge and they were the only Jewish family in the county for years. Her great grandfather had a store in Tucson, I believe called Kaufmans, a department store. Shellie's great uncle and aunt recently left Tucson; Ben and Sandy Cohen. One of their children still lives there, Gary and wife Jenna, recently married. Thanks, Ed Hersh hershes@flash.net

  • Hello! Another addition to the Grodzinsky genealogy, perhaps? My pgg was Samuel Grodzinsky who I believe came from the vicinity of Wasilishki or Vashilishok in pre-war (l) Lithuania. He married a "Hannah" Nevisky or Nevitsky from the same place. They emigrated to England, then to America to a place called St. Albans, VT -p robably because of the Central Vt. Railway. There they had numerous children including my gf Philip, Rose, Morris (Moe), Bessie (mezzo soprano who never married, died in Los Angeles) and a few others. There's a whole lot of diabetes (Philip was a double amputee, died at 50). Philip was a bit on the shady side. He sold furs to the Canadians and had the Northern Bag Company dealing in burlap that was passed on to my father, Nathan until his untimely death at 40 yrs. in 1961. Philip had two "black sheep" Mary Dora Grodzinsky Livingston Wolff and Louis Israel. There is also a tremendous thread of mental illness there, as well-a mixed bag! There you have it. -Phyllis Grodzinsky Winstead Psherryred1@verizon.net

Tales From The Yeshivah World
By: Rabbi Nosson Scherman. Rabbi Yisrael Salanter would not allow Zemiros to be sung or Torah to be discussed during a Shabbos meal. Why? What did he know that no one else thought of? - Why did Reb Chaim Brisker insist that people be allowed to" steal" the communtiy's wood? - Why did Reb Yehoshua Leib Diskin risk his life to save the yeshivos of Brisk? And why was the mayor so anxious to change them? - When Reb Yaakov's grandson was deathly ill and the doctors gave up hope, how did the Chofetz Chaim succeed in winning Hasem's mercy? -How did Reb Aryeh Levine teach a class that a Bar Mitzvah gift could be a matter of life and death. These stories are excitingly told and beautifully illustrated. By showing us how great people acted, they teach us how to act. When you read them you want to become a better person yourself. And you learn that our Torah leaders were greater than you ever knew before. | Publisher: Artscroll | Language: English | Volumes: 1 | Pages: 32 | Binding: Hard | Dimensions: 7" x 10" | Weight: 1.25 lb.
