Finding an affordable Tucson apartment

Tucson rental rates drop with the economy

The Tucson apartment housing market is enduring economic conditions with lower rent rates and more amenities. The Tucson rental housing, especially around the U of A, is facing higher vacancies, especially during the summer months when most students have gone.

Lower rents mean more choices

Tucson housing in general is lower than other parts of the country. This holds true for Tucson rentals as well.

But, like most other industries prices are falling.

While studio apartment are always cheaper, one bedroom apartments are often a better bargain. The additional square footage, separate kitchen and added space doesn't usually cost that much more in the long run.

Tucson studio apartment rates can start at $400-500 and go up to $1000 a month, depending on the age and location of the rental. Some apartment complexes, though, have discounted rate down to $300 for larger spaces.

Single bedroom and bath apartments in Tucson, AZ traditionally started at $500 or more. But, economic conditions, rates have dropped that figure into the $300 a month rental range for each unit.

Students often rent the prime properties first

The best time to rent an apartment in Tucson is May through July and December. These are the months that students attending the University of Arizona are out of town. Student housing becomes more affordable and the drop in tenants can also lower rents citywide.

Renting an apartment near the U of A becomes more difficult in August and January when the students return by the thousands. Affordable apartments near campus main gate fill up fast. Some apartment complexes near the UA are booked months or semesters in advance.
