Apple TV streams from iTunes, Netflix and your PC

$99 box fee for subscription TV

Apple TV ® has been updated again with subscription services in mind- with a start up fee of $99 for the new model. Of course, the new Apple TV can be used to stream videos, music and music from network computers, but its real power comes in connecting to iTunes, Netflix and other apps supported by Apple TV.

The release of the souped up Apple TV comes at the same time Google TV hits the market. Both units attach to a HD TV (either plasma, LCD or LED) as a separate source.

Both devices will stream movies, music and photos wirelessly from a nearby PC using Wi-Fi. But, to watch TV shows or movies, they require renting a streaming video. Each unit has its own sources of content.

Streaming movies and TV shows instead of download them or buying DVD may emerge as the new delivery standard. If renting streaming videos becomes popular, it may make DVD's and Blu-ray disks and players obsolete.

The new Apple TV

The small black box, which fits in your hand, has built-in HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and an internal power supply. The whole unit is less than four inches square. It is 80% smaller than the previous generation. It requires an HDMI connect to a HD TV in order to work.

It has an optical-audio port, an ethernet jack and built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi networking to stream content from nearby computers.

Stream web apps over Apple TV

You can also stream video content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe™, as well as music, photos and videos from PCs and Macs to an High Definition TV.

Stream your PC entertainment content over Apple TV

Watch slideshows of your photos on your HD TV using Apple TV’s selection of built-in slideshows. Stream content from your PC or Mac to the Apple TV via a home/office Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
