Mesa, Arizona Background
Mesa, Arizona's third largest city, is located right next to Tempe,
15 miles southeast of Phoenix. Actually the borders of Mesa and Tempe
blend into each other. It is often considered to be THE cultural hub of
the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Mesa features many art galleries, performing arts centers, shopping
centers, entertainment spots and historical sites. This city has a lot
to offer in its school system, for which it also takes great pride. Mesa
also has some gorgeous churches to view. The Mormon religion has its
famous Arizona Mormon temple located here. Visitors are welcome to visit
this beautifully created church, though only true Mormons are allowed
into the sanctuary area.
Mesa is the Winter home of the Chicago Cubs and has the Champlin Fighter Museum.
Mesa, which means "table" in Spanish, was named by the Mormans when
they arrived in March 1877 to rebuild the Hohokam irrigation canals into
the present day city of 324,000 people.
