Atmosphere

Profile by Jessica Zucker

The American underground hip-hop group, Atmosphere, was formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1994.

Slug (Sean Daley), Ant (Anthony Davis), Spawn (Derek Turner) were the original members of Atmosphere, but after the release of Overcast! Spawn left the group.

Atmosphere has been known to attract a punk and indie rock audience while their music is rap influenced by KRS-One, De La Soul and Public Enemy. Atmosphere formed their own independent record label, Rhymesayers, and made their band name through touring.

Just before releasing their fourth album, Atmopshere signed with indie label Epitaph Records.[ii] Slug is the focal point of Atmosphere with his personalized vocals and emotional lyrics.

He is the son of a black father and white mother who divorced when he was a teen; encouraging Slug to engage in the hip-hop, graffiti, break dancing scene.[iii]

He acquired the alias Slug from the nickname “Sluggo” his father would call him when he was a child.[iv]

Lyrics:

“I said I'll make you smile for the simple fact I'm good at it
Ill make you smile just so I can sit and look at it…”
–“Modern Man’s Hustle”

“I've got a sickness, it feels like love
It's not contagious, take off the gloves
Drop your defenses, apply a coat of perfect
I'll form the sentences you try to interpret”
–“A Song About A Friend”

“And if I was you, I wouldn't hear a word I said
Wouldn't trust nothing to start it up inside my head
I'd make a conscious effort to live instead
Of trying to kill the monsters that reside underneath the bed”
–“If I Was Santa Claus”

“Those are your shoes
These are my shoes
We've got issues”
–“Shoes” [v]

You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having

[ENHANCED] [EXPLICIT LYRICS]

Listen to music samples (windows and Macintosh). Amazon.com: Atmosphere's fifth album (not including rapper Slug's numerous side projects) isn't quite as consistent as previous CDs like 2003's Seven's Travels or Lucy Ford, but it's hardly lagging far behind. For all the attention Slug gets as a rapper--deservedly so, given that he, along with Aesop Rock, is a smarter, less pissy Eminem--producer ANT is as vital to this pairing as anyone, lacing the album with everything from the hard knock beats of "The Arrival" to the gospel-influenced charm of "Get Fly," to the old-school drum assault on "Bam." Slug covers ground that he's already been renowned for, a balance of in-your-face braggadocio ("Watch Out"), tunneling introspection ("Little Man"), and a typically reliable ditty about his female problems ("Pour Me Another"). The only real fault is that the album doesn't quite seem to be as adventurous as it could be, but even in playing it (relatively) safer, this is still easily one of the top 10 rap albums of 2005. --Oliver Wang
