  • On Saturday, February 22, from 1-5pm, Buffalo Bill-relative Gerald Cody share Cody family stories, enjoy a free magic show for the kids by Ross the Magician and Don Larry speaks about "Cody As Senator." There will also be Native American jewelry sales and displays, book talks, and free Buffalo Bill Cody birthday cake.
  • On Sunday, February 23, from 1-5pm, Robert E. Zucker will talk about the legends and history of the Santa Catalina Mountains, Cody and his mines, and Oracle's unique history.

“Buffalo Bill” Cody visited Tucson, Arizona often during the last decades of his life. Cody owned several mines at Campo Bonito in the Santa Catalina Mountains, near Oracle. Cody would spend many winters in Oracle managing his mines which produced tungsten, silver and gold. This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the Cody’s passing in January 1917.

This year’s event also pays tribute to William “Flint” Carter, Cody Days founder, who passed away in December. Carter spent over four decades prospecting the Santa Catalina Mountains and held over 100 mining claims in the mountains.

Gerald Cody’s involvement with the Cody Family organization started in Ohio where he lived until moving to Arizona in 2005. Gerald’s original involvement with the Ohio Circle followed in his father’s footsteps to become President of the Circle and then to become President of the International Cody Family for 15 years.

The Cody Family arrived in Massachusetts in 1695 and became landowners in 1698. The original settlers were Philip and Martha. They had five children and from that beginning, the family expanded and moved west through the new frontier and Canada. The family has an extensive genealogy from the family’s arrival in Beverly, MA.

The International Cody Family, a 502c3 organization, was organized in the early 1900’s. The first actual meeting was held in 1925 in Cleveland, OH. The family funded the original site of the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody, WY at that meeting with pledges that totaled less than $100. The family was wide spread throughout the United States and Canada at that time and was divided into family circles where there were pockets of Cody’s with larger groups in MA, WY, OH, FL, east and west Canada.

With the passing of the event's founder, Buffalo Bill Cody Days in Oracle is sponsored Southwest Alternatives Institute, Inc.(SAI), a non-profit organization, founded in Tucson in 1977. Flint and Bob organized the Santa Catalina Historical Preservation Program to preserve local history and legends of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Buffalo Bill Cody Days Oracle

During the last decades of his life, the world-famous 19th century entertainer Willaim Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody invested in several mines in the Santa Catalina Mountains, near Oracle. He was known to carry around a pure gold nugget from his mines in his pocket as proof of the value of his mines.

Cody spent his last winter years until 1917, in Oracle, managing his dozens of mining claims at Campo Bonito on the far north edge of the Catalina Mountains, near the YMCA’s Triangle Y Ranch Camp. The mines produced tungsten used by Thomas Edison for his light bulb filaments. As a by-product, they also produced silver and some gold. While visiting his mining camp, Cody would search the Catalinas for the legendary Iron Door Mine with his friend William Neal, the owner of the local Mountain View hotel in Oracle.

Buffalo Bill Cody often stayed at a little house at Campo Bonito with the miners for weeks at a time while his wife, Louisa, waited at the comfortable hotel in Oracle, a few miles away. On several Christmas days, Cody played Santa Claus to the mineworkers’ children in Oracle. There were even rumors in Washington of a possible Senator Cody from the new State of Arizona. Though intrigued at the prospect, Cody did not pursue the office. A reporter commented how out of place Cody would look in Congress with his long hair and Western wear.
