New for 2018, Heartland has added two Social Impact Awards; two juried winners – one narrative and one documentary feature – will honor stories centered on the fight for equality and justice, each with a $2,500 cash prize. The call for entries period opens one week after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominees for the 2018 Academy Awards®, including three short films from the 2017 Heartland Film Festival. “Year after year we’re honored to bring Oscar-winning and nominated films to Indiana at the Heartland International Film Festival,” said Heartland Film’s Director of Film Programming Greg Sorvig. “With the expansion of an all-new short film festival called Indy Shorts in July and expanded awards for the Heartland International Film Festival in October, we are dedicated to growing and showcasing top story-driven film content from around the globe.” Heartland Film previously announced the expansion of the all-new Indy Shorts event, an Academy Award®-qualifying film festival solely focused on the art of shorts films, 40 minutes or shorter in length. One of the five Finalists will receive the $25,000 Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature, and will be announced at GLOW: Awards Party during the Festival, with the four non-winners receiving $1,000 each.
