When we are in the midst of a night’s sleep, we experience a state of consciousness that still defies scientific explanation. Sleep is a universal phenomenon. Every living creature sleeps. Without it, our bodies would not be able to adequately function. Research on sleep deprivation shows a certain amount of mental rest and physical relaxation is needed to maintain our sanity and health. Everyone knows how tired they can feel after not getting enough sleep the night before. The quality of a good night’s sleep may affect our functions and actions the next day. Sleep occurs in cycles. The sleep/wakefulness (rest/activity) cycle is a natural process of life. Normally, we tire about the same time each night. We are active about the same amount of time each day. This natural cycle is part of our biological circadian rhythm that regulates bodily processes. Within the past few decades, scientific research into dreaming and related states of consciousness (lucid dreaming, hypnosis, meditation, ESP, etc.) has begun to uncover some of the mystery about what happens to us physically, emotionally and mentally while we sleep and dream. A watchful eye is kept on the most minute bodily changes that occur as the body passes from wakefulness into sleep into dreaming and back into wakefulness throughout a sleep cycle. Most of these changes can only be detected by sensitive machines which pick up these small changes in the electrical activity of the brain. Sleep research has opened a whole field of study in the physical, psychological, and biological changes that occurs during those “lost” hours. We sleep away nearly a quarter of our lives. Even with the vast experience of modern science, we’re still pretty much in the dark about this other side of our lives. There is still so much to know about the world we live in inside of our minds. The hidden realm of sleep continues to reveal itself. Next: Videos in Your Mind
