Air Transport Association Says Domestic Carrier Operations Running Smoothly; No Better Time to Fly

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Air Transport Association (ATA), the industry organization representing leading U.S. airlines, says that domestic airline operations for its member carriers are running as smoothly as any other summer day and encourages customers to continue with their travel plans.

"In light of the new security regulations, the airlines, government and airports have taken extraordinary steps to ensure that our customers fly safely and get to their destinations as scheduled," said ATA President and CEO James C. May. "As a result, customers are getting through the security checkpoints quickly and, with few exceptions, operations are running on time. I can think of no better time to fly."

May also stated that carriers have been adding staff to accommodate the increased volume of checked baggage but still urged customers to allow a little extra time at the airport.

ATA reminds passengers to check with their airline prior to leaving for the airport, and to allow adequate time to check in. Customers can visit the ATA Web site (http://www.airlines.org/) for links to updated travel information. Customers also should visit the Transportation Security Administration Web site (http://www.tsa.gov/) or contact their airline for the most up-to-date information on security measures and procedures.

Airport Security Eased

TSA Adjusts Latest Ban Without Compromising Security

Air travelers should keep the following tips in mind when traveling this summer's busy season in light of the heightened airport security over the recent U.K. terrorism plot. This incident requires new rules and more disruptions for travelers domestically and worldwide from now on..

New US Air Travel Rules:

  • Do not carry on liquids (includes water bottles, beverages, perfume, shampoo, hairspray, etc.). Items will be prohibited and must be thrown out in order to pass security. Put all items in liquid form in your check-in baggage. TSA recently eased rules allowing small amounts, up to 4 ounces, of liquid nonprescription medicine. New rules allow up to 4 ounces of liquid non prescription medicine. Read more about TSA Adjusts Latest Ban Without Compromising Security (8/13/06)
  • Blood-sguar treatments such as glucose gel for diabetics, solid lipstick and baby food are now allowed. But all aerosals are still prohibited.
  • In U.S. travel, passengers must remove their shoes at the security check point.
  • Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure at major airports. Plan up to 3 hours for larger airports. Expect long lines and more thorough examinations during security checks. Call ahead or check the airlines or airport web site for expected delay times and additional security information.

UK Airlines Security:

  • In the U.K., do not carry on laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs or electronics onboard. Put those items, and all liquids, in your check-in luggage. Read more: International Business Travelers
  • ATA Statement on Terror Plot in Britain The Air Transport Association (ATA), the industry organization representing leading U.S. airlines, today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) security steps based on specific threat information related to the terror plot in Britain: "The government's announcement of temporarily heightened security measures, banning any passenger from carrying liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions aboard aircraft, are in response to serious threat information discovered and acted upon by the authorities. The airlines are cooperating fully with DHS in implementing these measures to assure the safety and security of our customers and crews. While it is likely these temporary measures will result in passenger inconvenience, we hope that the traveling public understands these measures will allow them to travel with confidence in the security of our system."

ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND:

  • Travel with a government-issued photo identification card
  • Allow adequate time to get to the airport, park your car (if you drive to the airport), check in, go through security and get to your gate.
  • Most carriers request that passengers arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights, and up to two hours in advance for international flights. It is important to check with your carrier for specific recommendations.
  • Save time at the airport with automated check-in options, offered via airline Web sites (boarding passes) and at airport kiosks, up to 24 hours before departure.
  • Leave lighters and other Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-prohibited items at home.
  • To expedite the screening process, place all metallic objects (e.g., loose change, keys, cell phone, watch, camera) in a carry-on bag before arriving at security checkpoints.
  • Make sure that all of your bags, checked and carry-on, include your name and contact information on both the inside and outside of each bag. Also remove all old destination baggage tags from previous trips.
  • If you wish to lock your checked baggage, use a TSA-approved luggage lock.
  • Federal rules limit each customer's carry-on baggage to one standard-size bag and one personal item (e.g., purse, briefcase, laptop computer). During heightened security periods, carry-on luggage might be prohibited or restricted.
