The Story of the Phantom of the Opera filmIn 1943, director Arthur Lubin had produced a 92-minute long color version. He was an Oscar winner for Cinematography and Art Direction for the film. In 1962, the Phantom of the Opera was directed by Terence Disher, starring Herbert Lom, Heather Sears. 84 minute British production. In 1989, director Dwight H. Little produced the fourth version of Phantom of the Opera with Robert England and Jill Schoelen. Shot in Budapest, but set in London. The 1999 Italian version of The Phantom of the Opera was directed by Dario Argento. According to archive.org, this print is a DVD rip from the milestone edition, with the man with lantern sequence edited in. It is the best available print of the film from the UCLA film and television archives. The soundtrack is Symphony No. 8 in B minor, best known as the "Unfinished Symphony". It is not the best soundtrack for the film, but I was unsure whether or not the 1929 soundtrack is in the public domain. Staring Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin and Norman Kerry. At the Opera of Paris, a mysterious phantom threatens a famous lyric singer, Carlotta and thus forces her to give up her role (Marguerite in Faust) for unknown Christine Daae. Christine meets this phantom (a masked man) in the catacombs, where he lives. Far beneath the Paris Opera House, the mysterious Phantom advances the career of an understudy to the female lead role in Faust in hopes of claiming her for his love. The tour-de-force is Lon Chaney's acting beneath several variations of masks and makeup, rescuing wooden supporting characters and pedestrian directing by Rupert Julian.
