Tucson Teen The Electronic Newspaper for Teenagers

Tucson Teen newspaper was first published in Tucson, Arizona during the October 1981. Prior to that, it was published as Youth Awareness Press and Youth Alternatives Press since 1978.

The Tucson teen newspaper was produced by a staff of young people. It was one of the nation's first newspapers for and by youth. The publication was the foundation for the Entertainment Magazine.

Tucson Athletes Win National Championship

Fountain Valley, CA - July, 2 2012 - Jesus Avila, 13, and a Tucson, Arizona, native wins his first United States Handball Association's 4 Wall Handball National title this past weekend. Avila, who took up the sport just a few years back at Freedom Park, where he was introduced to the game by WPH Development Director, Abraham Montijo and other coaches has a very hopeful handball career that could place him on a short list of up and coming talent gearing up for a potential professional handball career as a touring athlete.

"Avila dominated the field at the most coveted event in the nation," says WPH President, Fred Lewis. "We have watched him grow up and I can see a very hopeful future for this amazing young person." The United States Handball Association's 62 National Handball Championships were held in Fountain Valley, CA, this past weekend where nearly 400 competitors showed up to win a title.

Other Tucson residents, David Vincent and Charlie Wicker, also took down trophies. Vincent was one half of the 35 doubles category alongside Naty Alvarado Jr (CA); meanwhile, Charlie Wicker won the 75 national doubles with Fred Chapman (MT). Vincent is the executive director of the WPH (based out of Tucson) and is a multiple world and national champion and current Australian open singles and doubles champion. 

Luis Moreno (AZ), ranked #1 on the WPH pro tour, was able to take home a national pro doubles title on Sunday when he and Andy Nett (MN) defeated Luis and Daniel Cordova (Juarez, MX) in straight sets. Moreno, Wicker, Vincent and Avila play handball and train locally at the Tucson Racquet and Fitness Club. All athletes intend on competing in the World Handball Championships in October of this year (Dublin, Ireland), representing Tucson, Arizona and team USA.

The United States Handball Association, based out of Tucson, AZ, is the governing body of the sport and holds multiple national championship tournaments throughout the year in one, three and four wall play. The world Players of Handball Foundation has a mission to expose the game of handball through innovation and administers the professional handball tour, the Tucson Youth Handball Project and films and broadcasts major events world wide.

Tucson Student Represents AZ In National History Contest

Read Wilder, an 8th grade student at St. Michael's Parish Day school won the Middle School History Bee for the state of Arizona in Tempe on February 24. He will be one of 32 middle school students competing in the National History Bee on May 10-12 in Washington, D.C.  For the bee, the United States has been divided into 32 regions and the state of Arizona constitutes its own region. The National History Bee is sponsored by The History Channel which will televise the Bee’s final round with 16 competitors.
 
In order to win the regional competition, Read had to answer a wide variety of questions regarding  all facets of U.S. history (colonial period to the present) and World history (ancient history to the present). At the end of the preliminary round the students with the highest number of points will advance to the final round. The grand prize winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship from Houghton-Mifflin, a leading U.S. textbook publisher.
 
Read Wilder has attended St. Michael's since first grade. In addition to his love of history, he is currently the Student Council President, a member of the wind ensemble and a St. Michael's Declamation Day award winner.
 
The sponsors of the History Bee have provided airfare and lodging for Read and one of his parents to attend the three-day event. This will be Read's second trip to Washington in two weeks as he has just returned from his six day school class trip which focused on U.S. history from the colonial period to the current day.  “I want to represent St. Michael’s well at the national history bee,” Read commented, “and I want to win!”
