History & Legends of the Santa Catalina Mountains
- On Saturday, February 22,
from 1-5pm, Buffalo Bill-relative Gerald Cody shared Cody family
stories, a free magic show for the kids by Ross the Magician and Don
Larry speaks about "Cody As Senator." There was also Native American
jewelry sales and displays, local book talks by author/publisher Bob
Zucker, and free Buffalo Bill Cody birthday cake.
- On Sunday, February 23,
from 1-5pm, Zucker shared the legends and history of the
Santa Catalina Mountains, Buffalo Bill Cody and his mines, and Oracle's
unique history.
“Buffalo
Bill” Cody visited Tucson, Arizona often during the last decades of his
life. Cody owned several mines at Campo Bonito in the Santa Catalina
Mountains, near Oracle. Cody would spend many winters in Oracle managing
his mines which produced tungsten, silver and gold. 2020 marked the
103rd anniversary of the Cody’s passing in January 1917.
This event
also paid tribute to William “Flint” Carter, Cody Days founder, who
passed away in December 2018. Carter spent over four decades prospecting the
Santa Catalina Mountains and held over 100 mining claims in the
mountains. Watch Flint Carter
Tribute. Bob Zucker continued the Cody Days event at the Oracle Inn for
two more years until the pandemic hit and the Oracle Inn closed down.
Gerald Cody’s
involvement with the Cody Family organization started in Ohio where he
lived until moving to Arizona in 2005. Gerald’s original involvement
with the Ohio Circle followed in his father’s footsteps to become
President of the Circle and then to become President of the
International Cody Family for 15 years.
The Cody Family
arrived in Massachusetts in 1695 and became landowners in 1698. The
original settlers were Philip and Martha. They had five children and
from that beginning, the family expanded and moved west through the new
frontier and Canada. The family has an extensive genealogy from the
family’s arrival in Beverly, MA.
The International
Cody Family, a 502c3 organization, was organized in the early 1900’s.
The first actual meeting was held in 1925 in Cleveland, OH. The family
funded the original site of the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody, WY at
that meeting with pledges that totaled less than $100.
The family was wide spread throughout the United States and
Canada at that time and was divided into family circles where there were
pockets of Cody’s with larger groups in MA, WY, OH, FL, east and west
Canada.
With the December 2018 death of the
events' founder, William “Flint” Carter, Buffalo
Bill Cody Days in Oracle sponsorship was managed through Southwest
Alternatives Institute, Inc.(SAI), a non-profit organization, founded
in Tucson in 1977. Flint Carter and Robert Zucker organized the first
Cody Days event in 2016, and formed the Santa Catalina Historical
Preservation Program to preserve local history and legends of the Santa
Catalina Mountains through SAI, Inc. Carter spent over four decades prospecting the
Santa Catalina Mountains and held over 100 mining claims in the
mountains. Both have published books on the Catalina Mountains.
