Travel industry slump may not head off price hikes
Fares and rooms down, but rates edging up for the holidays
Fall vacation discounts will still be plenty
There are some advantages, though, to the economy downturn in the travel industry. While some prices will rise, there may be discounts in restaurant specials, travel vacation packages, local staycation offers and discount in admissions to tourist attractions and entertainment. Smaller companies may better adapt in many cases by lowering prices to drawn in business.
Another growing option is vacation packages, offered by travel agencies like Southwest Airline Vacations and timeshare presentations as a way to fill empty rooms and seats.
These cheap vacation packages often bundle a weekend with dining and amusement credits. Southwest Vacations, part of Southwest Airlines, bundles air, hotel and even car rental.
Global Hotel Prices Drop 12% Room Rates Fall Across All Continents
The average price of a hotel room around the world fell by 12% last year, according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index.
Hotel prices in December 2008 were more than one tenth lower than they were the year before and room rates were just 1% above their level in January 2004, when the Hotel Price Index was started.
The 12% fall in room rates was driven by price drops across every continent.

International Travel Rules
New travel IDs needed
U.S. citizens who cross into the United States from Mexico and Canada must show proof of citizenship beginning June 1, 2009.
A passport or passcard will be required for re-entry. U.S. citizens without one will face extra scrutiny. A driver's license or birth certificate will not be accepted any longer.
